The use of composites in vehicle structures has been limited by the matrix response to cyclicand/or impact loading. Both of these loading cases, while different in their methods ofapplication elicit similar debilitating response in the composite, I.e. matrix cracking anddelamination. This paper will outline the approach taken to improve the matrix response, nominally called toughness. This improvement will lead to laminates and parts with longer lifeafter hit or improved response to hit after life which for the purpose of this paper is here namedDurability. The approach consists of an appraisal of existing tests/ test specimen to measure theappropriate properties; and an appraisal of existing models to assess their ability to predictimprovements. A new test method is being assessed using the same methodology. Finally newmaterials/ material concepts are being studied to move toward improving the matrix response tocyclic/ impact loading.
