Chitosan based formulations for mucosal vaccination againstBovine Herpesvirus Type 1 (BoHV-1)

BoHV-1 is one of the most prevalent pathogenicagents in cattle and causes severe respiratorydiseases. In Turkey, where the prevalence of thisinfection is high, vaccination is the main strategy,and currently parenteral vaccines are availableagainst this virus. However mucosal immunization isaccepted to be more labour efficient and less harmfulto the animals. For this purpose gel andmicroparticle formulations were prepared andcharacterised to deliver BoHV-1 using chitosanwhich is shown to be a suitable polymer both as anadjuvant and delivery system for mucosalimmunization.
