@@1 Introduction An important central pathway for the degradation of chloroaromatic compounds in bacteria is the chlorocatechol oxidative pathway or modified ortho cleavage pathway (MOCP). Chlorocatechols are key intermediate metabolites formed during the degradation of various chloroaromatic compounds. Chlorocatechols are subsequently degraded by the MOCP enzymes, which include chlorocatechol 1,2-dioxygenase, chloromuconate cycloisomerase, dienelactone hydrolase, and maleylacetate reductase. Among environmentally significant catabolic activities, aromatic ring cleavage is the limiting step of the degradation of a number of natural and xenobiotic compounds which are potential pollutants.
