Streptococcus suis infections are a well recognized problem in the swine industry worldwide. Meningitis, septicaemia, arthritis and polyserositis are typical clinical signs associated with this pathogen, especially in younger pigs, while respiratory tract infections can be found in pigs of all ages. To date, 35 different 5. suis serotypes have been described. This challenge study was designed to evaluate the efficacy of ceftiofur crystalline free acid sterile suspension (EXCEDE for Swine; Pfizer Animal Health), administered as a single intramuscular (IM) dose of 5 mg ceftiofur equivalents (CE)/kg BW, for the treatment of the disease complex (meningitis, arthritis and/or septicaemia) associated with 5. suis in nursery pigs. This GCP study was pre-evaluated by the Dutch Ethical Review Committee and was conducted under close veterinary supervision in accordance with applicable animal welfare guidelines.
