Lawsonia intracellularis(LI) is an obligate intracellular bacterium and the causative agent of proliferative enteropathy (PE),or ileitis,in pigs as well as a variety of other species.There is high morbidity with the disease in the young pig,characterized by a large variability in market weights,and high mortality associated with infection of the gilt population.
