Cutter Suction dredgers are capable to excavate all kinds of materials.Depending on the cutter power installed they can dredge from soft soil as clay and silt to hard rocks. Furthermore, cutter suction dredgers can dredge rather accurate in the horizontal plane due to the rotation of the dredger around the main spud pole. The vertical tolerance is certainly not bad compared with other type of dredgers such as, the trailing suction hopper dredgers and plain suction dredgers but needs continues attention during the dredging works to arrive to the required dredging depth. Due to the research executed at the Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands, more insight is got in the phenomena causing spillage by cutter process. The main phenomena are that the material is thrown out of the cutter by the rotational speed of the cutter and the insufficient transport capability of the cutter and/or dredge pump to transport the material to the suction mouth. Besides spillage from the above mentioned phenomena spillage can occur too by incorrect operating of the dredger. In this paper the first phenomenon will be discussed and operational boundaries given when which phenomenon is decisive.
