A portable system that incorporates an array of Shear Horizontal Surface Acoustic Wave (SH-SAW) sensors for the investigation of liquid media sensing for liquid identification is presented. Specifically, the acoustoelectric interaction between a SH-SAW sensor array and different commercial brands of natural still spring water is investigated as a novel application of an electronic tongue. Transient frequency responses for the samples are presented where the sensing mechanism is based upon perturbation of the electrical properties of the adjacent liquid. Pattern recognition using a neural network algorithm is then investigated for the discrimination between the four types of sample liquids.
