This study presents the first known biaxial mechanical analysis of PIS, and will provide the basic information for the future remodeling studies. It is interesting to note that when the PIS is implanted as a arterial replacement, the bulk of thecollagen fibers are oriented in the longitudinal direction, which is opposite to the predominately circumferential orientation of the elastin and collagen fibers found in blood vessels. How native P15 collagen fiber orientation and mechanical behaviorchange post-implantation will be the next major step in our investigation.
