The temperatures the tungsten rods in the target of an Accelerator Production of Tritium device are estimated assuming only radiative heat transfer. Delay in uncovering the rods and the flooding of the cavity surrounding the rod bundles reduces the temperatures. The temperature are not high enough to melt the tungsten, but high enough for oxidation to be a concern.
