Bartnet: real time data communication network

The San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit District (BART) has served the San Francisco Bay Area with a regional transportation service for the past 23 years. It is presently undergoing an expansion and rehabilitation process that includes upgrading the computer and communication systems with state-of-the-art technologies. The general network architecture of this new generation of computing and communication system has been given the name "BARTnet". BARTnet is a "high availability", "fully integrated and centrally managed", enterprise network, using industry off-theshelf, components as building blocks, following an Open System strategy to support a new generation of computing and communication services. BARTnet is a real time data communication "intranet", based on mature and proven internetworking technologies such as "Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)", "multi-protocol routers", "Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) routing protocol", "Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP)", "Remote Network Monitoring (RMON)","LAN switching hub", "Integrated Service Data network (ISDN) backup", "relational data base management", "UNIX workstation", Fiber Distributed Data Interface (FDDI)", "Synchronous Optical Network (SONET)", "Fst Ethernet", and a "network management system". BARTnet provides the DISTRICT with an infrastructure to move "data" more effectively. It is a vital component in the strategic plan of the District to provide better service to the customer.
