For the past several decades the structural design of the Electrostatic Precipitator (ESP) and Fabric Filter (FF) Casings has been mainly based on the requirements and formulas of the AISC, ASCE and building codes such as UBC, etc. Being very particular types of equipment, the structural systems of the Electrostatic Precipitators and Fabric Filter Casings cannot be efficiently designed by a simplistic application of the requirements and formulas developed by AISC and ASCE for regular cases of steel buildings and other structures. Following the same concepts and principles the current ASCE and AISC standards are based on, the paper emphasizes the structural abilities specific to the Casing systems for Electrostatic Precipitators and Fabric Filters. This paper presents only the general aspects of a structural design philosophy which is specific to the casings of the Electrostatic Precipitators and Fabric Filters, thus allowing for a more rational and efficient design approach. It is not intended to present or discuss the details of the structural design criteria for these particular types of equipment. For Electrostatic Precipitators, the ICAC (Institute of Clean Air Companies; formerly IGCI) has developed a guideline for structural design criteria, in 1976, which was updated at the end of 1993 (Ref.1; in printing at the time of preparation of this paper), following basically the main ideas of the design philosophy presented in this paper.
