The human computer team: interaction or interference?

Advances in informaiton age technology are driving both the need and the ability to automate cognitive functions. The need is based on the complexity of the decision-making environment due to substantial increases in information that must be considered in making timely, accurate decisions. Digital systems and decision aids are being designed to automate many of the functions previously performed by the decision-maker. Many cognitive functions have bene automated to the extent that the human is virtually out-of-the-loop during normal operatios, moving the human from active participant to passive monitor.
