PM_(2.5) SPECIATION SAMPLE PROCESSING SYSTEM

Research Triangle Institute (RTI) has developed a sample processing system for preparing sample modules and managing field sampling and laboratory analysis data for use with PM2.5 speciation networks. We are currently processing modules for more than 75 sample events (field and blank samples) per week with very few errors in module processing or data handling. Careful planning and organization has produced a system that ensures on-time delivery of sampling modules, sample analysis, and high-quality data for a large sampling network. Use of predefined sampler configurations, master sampling schedules, barcode scanners, identifier check digits and automated laboratory data entry ensures a high level of data quality. Results are reported to program participants and to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA's) Aerometric Information Retrieval System (AIRS). This system was implemented using Microsoft SQL Server as a relational database server with custom user programs written in Microsoft Access 2000. Custom Visual Basic programs were written to automate data entry from data files produced by laboratory instrumentation systems. This automation ensures that all laboratory data are transferred to the database without human data entry errors.
