This case study compares two high-tech firms' differences in organizational characteristics and learning activities beyond the boundary. It finds that the large company continuously develops new technology to achieve long-term survival through the balance between exploration and exploitation while the small enterprise grows quickly by leveraging focused technology and core business. The innovation-oriented firm pays more emphasis on learning beyond knowledge boundary and the customer-oriented firm focuses on learning beyond organizational boundary. The two firms' sustainable development implies two strategies to adapt the complexity of external environment.
