Sustainable Travel to Special Events

Abstract. The aims of this paper are to identify international best practice in providingrnalternatives to the private car for access to medium special events (typically less thanrn100,000 visitors). The paper discusses local and international case studies reviewed,rnand provides details of the most effective sustainable transport tools and techniquesrnavailable to planners, such as pedestrian facilities, cyclist facilities, public transport,rntaxis, ride sharing, trip planners, car park management, access plans and promotionrnchannels.rnSpecial events are, by their nature, unusual periods in terms of transport demand and/orrnsupply. In the majority of Australian states, planning controls for large special eventsrnare comprehensive, encompassing safety and risk management plans, trafficrnmanagement plans and usually public transport plans. However, the current focus ofrnplanning for special events in Australia continues to be planning for and accommodatingrnforecast travel demands. In particular, Local Councils and organisers of small andrnmedium events currently have little guidance available regarding sustainable accessrnopportunities.
