People's science movements (PSM) seek to bring social changes in India with science. The two schools prevalent in the intellectual climate of PSM are to promote modern scientific knowledge in place of superstitions and to promote Indian knowledge in place of western beliefs in science and technology. In both schools, women's issues related to science have not become a part of the mainstream of PSM. This is partly because many concerned scientists have internalized the ideology of modern or local science, and thus have been reluctant to challenge it. Meanwhile, women have been involved in many issues that are well within the purview of PSM activities.
