With the increasing use of composite materials and especially composite laminates with organic matrixes, the problem of the impact becomes predominant. Low velocity impacts (less than 100 m/s) are considered as particularly dangerous because the damage is not always visible. In many cases, the level of impact which significantly affects the mechanical properites of a composite is much less than the impact which causes visible damage. There is a need to better understand the damaging phenomena to predict the loss of mechanical properties. The residual compressive strength of hand lay-up laminates, which are commonly used in the composites industry, due to low velocity impact was experimentally investigated. Boeing Specifications Standard (BSS 7260) was adopted during this study. The effects of impact velocity and impact energy on residual strength were experimentally investigated in this study. However, the velcoity does not seem to have a predominant influence on the residual compressive properties.
