The objective of this work was to select an effective method to evaluate plant photosynthetic pigment content and composition.Three modified high performance liquid chromatographic programs were tested to determine photosynthetic pigment composition with an endcapped Spherisorb ODS-2 C18 column.Program II outweighted program I in accordance with baseline profile and peak symmetry.Lutein was better eluted in program I,but program II resolved chlorophyll b and β-carotene better than program I.However,when photosynthetic pigments content was expressed relative to the content of chlorophyll b,no pronounced difference was observed in relative pigments content between program I and II.Program III showed very poor performance with the endcapped ODS-2 C18 column,and failed to completely resolve chlorophyll b.Program II was thereby suggested as an effective approach to analyze plant photosynthetic pigment content and composition.
