Between environment and structure, there is a two-way interference: The effect of the environment on the structure and the impact of the structure on the environment. The theory of Environmentally Compatible Structures (ECS) has three fundamental parts, the basic principles, the practical application, and the analytical problems with theoretical interrelationships. The three basic principles refer to the following: Ⅰ. (As an axiom). The global lasting dynamic equilibrium of nature must be preserved. Ⅱ. Sustainable industrial and urban development is such, which satisfies the present needs of men without reducing or harming the needs of future generations (UN), Ⅲ. In a close system of limited (non-renewable) resources, lasting unlimited quantitative growth is not possible. Methods of application of the basic principles are shortly discussed. An approach to environmentally compatible design of bridges is presented. The final aim is to build up a new trend in building industry.
