Plants are divided into C_3 and C_4 type plants based on their photosynthate distribution characteristics. We have shown that even in C_3 type plants, there is a quite large difference in the utilization of photosynthate for respiration when rice and soybean were compared. To clarify this phenomenon we have performed pulse-chase experiment with ~(14)CO_2 in leaves of rice and soybean. We found that ①primary photosynthate distribution to the photorespiratory pathway related compounds (Gly and Ser) are higher in soybean than in rice, ②starch is one of the very active primary photosynthate pools in the case of soybean. From these results we will discuss different photosynthetic characteristics observed in rice and soybean.
