The negative environmental consequences of the use of peat have to be measured against the positive returns like cultural and socio-economic wealth. By recognizing and valuing this, one also pays tribute to those who spent there lives toiling in the peat. But both old and new cultural aspects of peat and peatlands are also quite interesting in their own right.
