摘要

A shape optimization model for axi-symmetric domes of variable thickness subjected to self-weight and external pressure load has been presented. A shape-algorithm automatically generates the finite element mesh and imposes constraints on the minimum and maximum principal stresses during the optimization process. This produces a minimum weight design that theoretically does not require any steel reinforcement. It is found that for domes subjected mainly to self-weight, the optimum design is always the minimum gauge design. For domes, subjected to significant external loads, larger curvatures with variable thickness are required and the presented shape optimization model is quite effective in producing minimum weight designs.
