The study reported here is undertaken to develop computer-aided procedures for optimizing axisymmetric mechanical structures subjected to thermal cycles by synthesizing their forms for a minimum weight and maximum service life.;An interactive computer simulation procedure is also developed to simulate the process of inducing and relieving residual stresses through heating and cooling of mechanical components.;Simplified computer routines are developed to aid the analysis and enhance the effectiveness of the optimization procedures. Means for inducing favorable prestress patterns through the use of pressfitting, autofrettage, and hot stretching are incorporated in the design procedures.
