This paper discusses how to reduce driver's over-reliance on a warning system which issuesrnan alert when an adaptive cruise control (ACC) system can not maintain safety in an emergency. Wernpropose "a deceleration meter" which shows the maximum deceleration rate in the last several seconds.rnBy looking at this meter after a relatively rapid deceleration, a driver may understand how the lastrndeceleration was close to the deceleration limit of the ACC system. We conducted an experiment withrna driving simulator and showed that driver's reaction to the rapid deceleration of a lead vehicle wasrnnot delayed even when the alert was missed if participants used the deceleration meter. This resultrnsuggests that the deceleration meter is effective for drivers to understand the functional limit of anrnACC system and to reduce the possibility of inappropriate reliance on the warning system.
