Pulsed-laser deposition (PLD) was investigated for depositing thin films of the mixed ionic-electronic conducting perovskite La_(1-x)Sr_xCoO_3 (LSCO) on porous a-A1_2O_3 substrates for use as oxygen separation membranes. It is demonstrated that reduced oxygen-pressure deposition at room temperature leads to smooth, uniform and dense films that are completely gas-tight to nitrogen flow whereas films deposited at high oxygen pressures are rough, granular and porous. Moreover, we report on the deposition of LSCO films on dip-coated, macroporous LSCO substrates in an attempt to develop an all-perovskite oxygen separation membrane.
