Modelling of the shotcrete in a tunnel lining is critical to the assessment of the safety of an advancing tunnel face. However, this area still presents engineers with considerable difficulty, often because of the limitations of modelling of the shotcrete. Given the characteristics of sprayed concrete and its behaviour, it is clear that simple linear elastic constitutive models are not adequate for the accurate prediction of the stress and strain distribution in a tunnel lining. A programme of 2D and 3D numerical analyses is underway to investigate how this modelling could be improved.
