The operation and maintenance of the 6x115 MW capacity run-of-the-river indigenously developed hydro power plant on the river Chenab in Stage-Ⅰand Stage-Ⅱ respectively in 1987 and 1996, because of operation with heavily silt laden water has been experienced to be eventful and challenging, demanding various kinds of improvements, upgradation and refurbishments over these years to reduce the frequency of unscheduled breakdowns, complex time consuming repairs and resultant interruptions in power. The areas addressed to in the exercises for extensive improvements inter-alia include different parts of power plant system in respect of both water way parts as well as others such as cooling, drainage and dewatering circuits. This article attempts a consolidation of experience gamed from the events encountered so far including their related problems and the adopted solutions till date as well as those others in the pipe line.
