ART IN ARCHITECTURE, THE CURTAIN WALL CONNECTION

Several opportunities to use curtain wall technology in large outdoor art projects are reviewed in this presentation: Building owners and architects are expanding applications of art in architecture by using glass and cladding as art objects themselves or as the medium to display images of color. Not that the curtain wall has not always been the architectural element of highest visual impact, but the boundaries of what is being done with glass and cladding in the construction industry are radically changing. Particular details of the Los Angeles International Airport Gateway Enhancement project and the New Maumee River Bridge in Toledo, Ohio are presented. Photographs of the projects and design details are shown to demonstrate how traditional glazing techniques are adapted to achieve the desired artistic expression. Some unique items encountered on the projects include vortex shedding analysis of cylindrical towers and testing prismatic glass panels.
