Numerical Analysis of Anchor Piles for Deep Excavations

A number of trough-type excavations, i.e. cut-and-cover constructions, with anchored underwater concrete base slabs have been built during the last few years in the city center of Berlin. Extensive tension loading tests were performed on single piles as well as groups of piles to determine the load capacity of the slab anchor piles, vibrated injection piles (RI-Piles) and bored injection piles with small diameter (GEWI-Piles), in the planning stage. The data of the loading tests have been used to calibrate the numerical models. Two and three dimensional finite element analyses were performed to study the pile-soil interaction under tension loads. A sophisticated hypoplastic constitutive relation was used to model the nonlinear material behaviour of the Berlin sand. Comparison of test results with numerical results demonstrates the capabilities of that nonlinear soil model.
