Introduction: This study was undertaken in an area in which there was widespread contamination by dioxin-like compounds (DLCs) of soils and river sediments (in the Tittabawassee River and Saginaw River) in Midland and Saginaw, Michigan from the Dow Chemical Company operations in Midland. We studied factors that predict se-rum concentrations of the TEQ, polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), polychlorinated-dibenzofurans (PCDFs), and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) for which World Health Organization Toxic Equivalency Fac-tors (TEFs) exist, using data from 946 participants in the University of Michigan Dioxin Exposure Study (UM-DES). The five congeners that are the largest contributors to the TEQ (2378-TCDD, 12378-PeCDD, 123678-HxCDD, 23478-PeCDF, and PCB-126) are presented. The study goals were to estimate the contribution of vari-ous exposure pathways to the serum concentration of these DLCs and to assess the impact of these contributions to the overall population.
