A series of hydraulic model investigations following a novel experimental approachrnwas conducted to analyze skimming flow over cascades or stepped spillways. Newrnexperimental data on air concentration, on the inception of air entrainment and onrnenergy dissipation in stepped spillways are presented and compared to smoothrnchute flows. The results demonstrate that the energy dissipation capacity of steppedrnspillways was often overestimated in earlier model studies due to insufficientrnconsideration of the aeration process.
