A comparison of an existing method and fuzzy modeling to estimate soil-water evaporation from a bare soil is presented. Both methods use input parameters associated with the simplified soil-surface energy balance, as well as easily obtained measurements at remote locations. An optimized fuzzy learning from example (OFLFE) algorithm was developed to generate the fuzzy model. The root mean squared error (RMSE) of the fuzzy model was 35% less than that of the existing method. The results indicate that fuzzy methods can be used to generate evaporation estimation models that predict evaporation better than the existing method.
