Daily surface soil moisture data, obtained with a C-band scatterometer on a bare soil, are used as the upper boundary condition of a numerical soil water transfer model. The model uses an implicit finite difference scheme to solve the nonlinear Richard's equation. Soil is represented as a two layer medium, differing by their hydraulic conductivities. The model is adjusted, by comparison between calculated and measured soil moisture profiles, and provides water budget and boundary fluxes as output. The evaporation computed from the model is comparable to the estimation from soil water content measurements (neutron measurements).
