Aqueous Sulphur Dioxide and Its Environmental Applications in Minerals and Metallurgical Industries

In mineral and metallurgical industries, inorganic sulphur chemistry plays critical roles in many processes where sulphur is often a nuisance that needs to be removed from products. In most cases, the removed sulphur ends up with streams of by-products/wastes as SO_2. Consequently, sulphur becomes an inevitable player in processes that are aimed at waste processing/recycling. In this paper, chemistry of SO_2 is briefly reviewed with emphasis on aqueous phase reactions. Examples drawn on research in this and other groups are used to illustrate the applicability of SO_2(aq) chemistry in environmental process development. Finally, research needs are discussed in terms of the utilization of SO_2 and other wastes.
