This paper presents a new method of remediation for nitrate-contaminated groundwater using permeable reactive barrier, considering microbial denitrification. Microbial denitrification needs an electron provider and a reductive condition to progress. The permeable reactive barrier is filled with biodegradable plastic and iron powder. Biodegradable plastic were used as electron provider by microbial denitrification, whereas iron powder was made reductive condition. A permeable reactive barrier was built at groundwater contaminated with nitrates, and a demonstration experiment has been conducted to clarify effectiveness of the site. After four months from startup, nitrate-nitrogen concentration of groundwater was located in downstream at the barrier, had been practically 0mg/L. The experiment proved that, microbial denitrification had been occurred in the permeable reactive barrier.
