Planned corrective measures to reclaim an old waste disposal site in Sharjah

The Municipality of Sharjah is planning to close the old waste disposal site near the University City and reclaim the land for beneficial purposes. The total area of the site is approximately 3.5 square kilometers. A joint university/government team conducted a preliminary site investigation and identified the boundaries of the site, the extent of contamination, and the general risk associated with the site. This paper reports the efforts contributed by the University researchers in the joint university/government team The investigation included soil, water, waste and gas surveys. The results of the investigation were used to identify the site-specific problems and alternative solutions to deal with the specific problems. This paper presents a summary of the investigation results, alternatives developed to address the site-specific problems, evaluation of the seven alternative, and details of the chosen remedial alternative to reclaim the site.
