INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS TO IMPROVE THE TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM IN LOS ANGELES COUNTY

Providing bus and rail service to over one million boardings each day is not an easy task, yet it is accomplished each day in Los Angeles County (County). In a County, where over 175 million vehicle miles are logged each day, smog from vehicle emissions is a great concern. The Los Angeles basin is the only area to be designated as an "extreme" non-attainment area for air pollution by the Federal Government. Finding solutions to provide an efficient transportation system is a challenge under present conditions in the County. Los Angeles is one of the premier centers for innovative solutions developed and implemented in all sectors of transportation. The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Agency (MTA) has made considerable progress in developing solutions with the help of several agencies. This paper discusses various techniques and programs developed by MTA and its partners in improving the transportation system. Some of the solutions include: Gateway Transit Center, Advanced Technology Transit Bus (ATTB) as shown in Figure 2, Fuel Cell Buyers Consortium, Automated Traffic Surveillance and Control (ATSAC), Fuel Cell Consortium, Smart Corridor, Alameda Corridor and High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) Lanes System. Also discussed are the Transitway Project, Rideshare 2000, Bike Stations and Transit childcare Center, Metro Art, Televillage and Project IMAJINE under Intelligent Transportation System (ITS). Los Angeles County has been a national leader in providing accessible service to all individuals. The following sections briefly describe various, adaptations, innovations and programs developed by the MTA in partnership with other jurisdictions to improve transit system in the County.
