Complex investigation for the in-house recycling of heavily contaminated fine superalloy scraps is reported. Its main goal is identification of the optimal conditions for scraps pretreatment and melting in an electroslag crucible remelting (ESCR) furnace that is mostly unknown to Western experts. The ESCR type furnace gives an opportunity to melt a charge in a flux layer heated by a relatively non-consumable upper graphite electrode. The generated molten metal is accumulated in a crucible with a basic refractory lining. The proposed special graphite electrode protection and opti-m»l flux composition for scraps recycling produced the significant savings.
