Understanding and Implementing of ISO/TS 16949

ISO/TS 16949 was prepared by IATF (International Automotive Task Force) and representatives from ISO/TC 176 (Technical Committee). The goal of this Technical Specification is the development of fundamental quality systems that provide for continuous improvement, emphasising defect prevention and the reduction of variation and waste in the supply chain. This Technical Specification aligns existing automotive quality system requirements within the global automotive industry and avoids multiple certification audits. In this Technical Specification, quality planning activities of all pre-launch phases have been integrated under the new heading: 'Product realisation'. This Technical Specification specifies, in conjunction with ISO 9001: 1994, the quality system requirements for the design/development, production and, when relevant installation and servicing of automotive-related products. This Technical Specification is applicable to production and service part supplier and subcontractor 'sites' providing parts or materials, or heat treating, painting, plating, or other finishing services, or other customer-specified products. In accordance with its plan, the International Automotive Task Force is working on the alignment of ISO/ TS 16949:1999 with ISO 9001:2000. The revised version of ISO/TS 16949 is expected to be published by March 2002, in accordance with the requirements for review of an ISO Technical Specification within three years. There are no plans to revise the existing automotive catalogues AVSQ94, EAQF94, QS9000, and VDA 6.1 during this period.
