The Saitstone facilities, at the Savannah River Site (SRS), stabilize and dispose of low-level radioactive liquid. The Saitstone facility consists of the Saitstone Production Facility (SPF) and the Saitstone Disposal Facility (SDF). They dispose of treated waste from the SRS tank farms, which process waste from the chemical separation facilities. Most of Site's tank farm waste is immobilized within two waste forms: glass, which contains about 99 percent of the radioactivity, and cement-like grout, which contains most of the volume. The SPF receives the low-radioactive treated salt solution and stabilizes it by mixing the salt solution with fly-ash, furnace slag and cement. A grout hopper tank within the SPF is used to perform the final stage of mixing and the resulting grout, or slurry, is mechanically pumped into SDF concrete disposal units where the grout solidifies into a low-level radioactive waste form called "saitstone."
