When a volatile liquid comes into contact with another liquid of a higher temperature the energy transfer from the latter will cause a phase change of the former liquid. The energy transfer can be slow or fast, depending on what kind of fluids are involved and on how the two fluids are coming into contact with each other, i.e. on the mixing process. These conditions may be such that the energy transfer can be so rapid and coherent that a "rapid phase transition explosion" (RPT) results. Such events are reported inthe metal casting industry, in the paper industry (smelt in water) and in the transporation of liquefied gas over water. An RPT may have a damaging potential, and it is therefore of importance to investigate the mechanisms for and factors influencing RPT occurrence.
