Resonance Laser Ablation-Time of Flight is a very versatile and powerful surface analysis tool for the determination of trace quantities of elements in different matrices. In this paper we report the results of studies with manganese impurities (0.2-10000 ppm) in aluminium, copper and zinc matrices using a 45? incident, tuneable wavelength uv laser source and a reflectron time-of-flight spectrometer. A comparison of the detection limits for Mn in Al (<200ppb) and Mn in Zn (~50ppm) indicate that severe matrix effects exist.
