Self-assembled two-dimensional rafts of C_10-thiol stabilised Au and Ag nanoparticles ahve been studied by transmission electron microscopy.Colloidal suspensions containing bimodal particle size distributions give rise to a series of complex 2-D superstructures analogous to those adopted by intermetallic alloys.Furthermore, preparations containing both Au and Ag nanoparticles in the same solution can under certain conditions give rise to 'true' ordered colloidal nanoalloys. After deposition on a substrate, the metallic clusters can be deliberately and sometimes selectively destabilised to create features such as nanowires and patterned 2-D networks.
