LEADERSHIP AND SAFETY MANAGEMENT: REGULATORY INITIATIVES FOR ENHANCING NUCLEAR SAFETY IN THE REPUBLIC OF KOREA

Since the construction of the first nuclear power plant (NPP) in the Republic of Korea inrn1978;;a high level of nuclear safety has continued to be maintained. This has been the importantrnbasis on which the continuous construction of NPPs has been possible in the country. To date,rnregulatory initiatives;;leaderships and strategies adopting well harmonized regulatory systemsrnand practices of advanced countries have contributed to improving the effectiveness andrnefficiency of safety regulation and further enhancing nuclear safety. The outcomes havernresulted in a high level of safety and performance of Korean NPPs;;attributing largely to thernsafety promotion policy. Recently;;with the support of the Korean Ministry of Education,rnScience and Technology (MEST);;the Korea Institute of Nuclear Safety (KINS) established thernInternational Nuclear Safety School and created a Nuclear Safety Master’s Degree Programme.rnFurther;;it developed multilateral and bilateral cooperation with other agencies to promoternglobal nuclear safety;;with the aim of providing knowledge and training to new entrantrncountries in establishing the safety infrastructure necessary for ensuring an acceptable level ofrnnuclear safety.
