A multiplexed set of fiber-otpic fluorescence sensors was interfaced with a 2.4 x 51 cm soil colum to facilitate the modeling of one-dimensional solute transport across soil layer boundaries. An understanding of the effects of physio-chemical heterogeneities on pollutant transport is needed to interpret evidence of these effects which were recently noted in field studies. The "soil" layers consisted of 2 types of glass beads: untreated and silanized, used as surrogates for sand and organic soil, respectively. A square pulse of naphthalene was injected into the column using a starting concentration within a range previously found to be describable by linear sorption isotherms.
