Extending the capabilities of OTDRs for single-mode fibre full characterisation

This paper reviews the potentialities of the OTDR technique for full fibre characterisation. It first reminds the background sustaining such an approach. Our own results illustrate each step of the measurement procedure from Mode Field Diameter to Chromatic Dispersion. The results we got are then compared to well established or standardised techniques. Remaining difficulties are discussed and tracks for the future are identified.
