This paper presents a model to calculate notch development and subsequentrnmass failure of sand dunes. The model is verified by comparing calculated eroded volumernand recession distance against values measured in a small-scale laboratory experiment.rnTwo modes of mass failure were observed whereby the overhang generated by the removalrnof material from the dune foot (notching) by waves slid downward or toppled over.rnPrediction of the mass failure events is based on elementary engineering statics andrngeotechnical parameters.
