In general electric power system blackouts tend to have two recurring causes. These are lackrnof situational awareness and the other is a breakdown or misbehavior of the protection andrncontrol system due to multiple power system elements failing that pushes the grid beyond therndesign criterion. Although power is usually successfully restored to most customers withinrnhours, some localized areas in may not have power for a longer period.rnSome recent blackout reports have more specifically stated that the cause was due, in part, torn“lack of awareness of deteriorating conditions.” It also pointed out that the technology nowrnexists to establish a real-time transmission monitoring system based on a measurementrnnetwork composed of synchrophasors. The report recommended to establish a real-timernmeasurement system and develop computer based operational and management tools.rnThe authors have developed a simulation of a recent event utilizing object oriented databaserntechnology. Object oriented database technology is a way to model and track large sets ofrnobjects that have a natural relationship. This relationship can be modeled in the databasernproviding insights into relationships on the grid that may not be easily obtained using otherrntechnologies.rnBy analyzing the difference in phase angle and the rate of change in phase angle between arnPMU within the blackout area and a reference PMU in just outside the blackout area, we werernable to predict the multiple cascading events an hour before the situation became irreversiblyrnunstable. This paper describes the simulation study and provides broad implications forrnsituational awareness using object oriented database technology.rnThis paper reports on the results of the simulation study and the broader implication of thernadoption of object oriented database technology on the situational awareness of the SmartrnGrid.
