RHODES PENINSULA AND HOMEBUSH BAY REMEDIATION BY THERMAL TREATMENT IN SYDNEY, NEW SOUTH WALES, AUSTRALIA

The remediation projects are approaching or have passed the 50% completion point. From the work that has been done over the last 6 years, some observations and conclusions can be made. These include: 1. The need for effective legislation to hold polluters legally and financially accountable for contamination of former years; 2. Importance for maximising the scope of pilot treatability trials for contaminated materials, particularly with complex and difficult soil matrixes prior to finalisation of plant detailed design; 3. The vital importance of close community dialogue in facilitating the approval of such complex and controversial remediation projects; 4. The critical need for open and accountable planning and regulatory processes; 5. The benefits for open information exchange between stakeholders; 6. Benefits for co-ordination of regulatory role; and 7. The benefits to be gained by drawing on other regulatory organisations with experience in technology new to an area. In this case the US EPA has been of particular assistance to the NSW DEC.
