To expand genetic variation of wheat, we are introducing alien chromosome or chromosomal segments to wheat by wide hybridization and recurrent backcrossing methods. Perennial Triticeae species would be most valuable resources for wheat improvement. We have already produced several sets of disomic and monosomic addition lines of common wheat cv. Chinese Spring with Leymus racemosus, L. mollis or Psathyrostachys huashanica chromosomes. Some of the lines have been already tested for leaf rust, powdery mildew, scab, and preharvest sprouting. To discriminate each alien chromosomes in wheat, fluorescence in situ hybridizations with probes of genomic DNA and species-specific marker repetitive sequence were powerful.
